As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, it’s essential to prepare your RV Park Los Angeles trailer home for colder weather. Proper preparation can improve your comfort, lower energy costs, and protect your home from seasonal wear and tear. Here’s a guide to winterizing your trailer home effectively, ensuring a cozy, warm space all season long.

1. Insulate Windows and Doors

Drafts from windows and doors are one of the biggest culprits when it comes to heat loss. Sealing these gaps will make a noticeable difference in maintaining warmth:

Weatherstripping: Apply weatherstripping around the edges of doors and windows to block drafts. Foam tape, felt, or vinyl strips work well and are easy to install.

Window Insulation Kits: Use clear window insulation kits that add an extra layer of protection against cold air. These kits are affordable, and applying them over windows with a blow dryer is simple and effective.

Door Sweeps: Install a door sweep along the bottom of your doors to prevent cold air from entering. They’re inexpensive and can make a significant difference, especially in high-traffic areas.

2. Inspect and Insulate Your Pipes

Cold weather can put your plumbing at risk, especially in trailer homes where pipes are more exposed to outside temperatures. Protecting your pipes from freezing is crucial:

Pipe Insulation: Wrap pipes with foam or fiberglass insulation to retain warmth. Focus on pipes located under your trailer, as well as those near external walls.

Heat Tape: For pipes that are particularly vulnerable to cold, use electric heat tape to help keep them warm. It’s a simple solution that can prevent pipes from freezing and bursting.

Faucet Drip: During the coldest nights, leaving faucets dripping slightly can prevent the pipes from freezing by keeping water flowing.

3. Check the Roof and Gutters

Fall and winter weather can bring rain, ice, and even snow in some areas. Making sure your roof and gutters are in top shape is essential:

Roof Inspection: Check the roof for loose or damaged shingles and repair any areas showing signs of wear. Trailer home roofs are typically flat, so they may need extra attention to ensure proper drainage.

Clear the Gutters: Clean gutters of any leaves and debris to prevent clogs. When water can flow freely, it reduces the risk of ice dams and water buildup, which could damage your roof and siding.

4. Add Insulation to the Skirting

Skirting, the barrier that surrounds the base of your trailer home, helps to keep cold air from getting underneath. Properly insulated skirting can reduce drafts and help retain heat inside your home:

Insulate the Skirting: If your trailer’s skirting is thin, consider adding insulation around it. Rigid foam board insulation or thermal blankets are excellent options that can be cut to fit your skirting, keeping cold air out and heat in.

Inspect for Gaps: Check the skirting for any gaps or areas where air can seep in. Caulk or seal any gaps to ensure maximum efficiency.

5. Maintain Your Heating System

An efficient heating system is crucial for comfort and energy savings. Routine maintenance can help your system perform its best:

Replace Filters: Clean or replace filters in your heating system at the beginning of the cold season. Clean filters improve airflow, helping your heater work more efficiently.

Professional Inspection: Consider having a professional inspect your heating system to ensure it’s running efficiently. They can check for issues and clean internal components, so you’re not left in the cold on freezing days.

Space Heaters: If your main heating system needs a boost, consider a space heater. Modern space heaters are energy-efficient and can provide extra warmth to specific rooms, especially those with more exposure to outdoor temperatures.

6. Prepare for Power Outages

Winter weather can lead to power outages, so being prepared can make a big difference:

Backup Heating Options: If you live in a particularly cold area, consider investing in a backup heat source, like a propane heater or wood stove. Make sure it’s safe for indoor use and has proper ventilation.

Stock Up on Essentials: Keep a supply of blankets, non-perishable food, and bottled water on hand, along with flashlights and extra batteries, to keep comfortable if the power goes out.

7. Check for Carbon Monoxide Safety

As you rely more on heating, it’s essential to keep safety in mind. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly if undetected:

Install CO Detectors: Install carbon monoxide detectors in your trailer home if you don’t already have them. Ensure they’re in working order and replace batteries as needed.

Ventilate Properly: Make sure vents from heaters and stoves are free of blockages and function correctly to prevent CO buildup.

Conclusion

Preparing your trailer home for colder weather doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By taking these steps, you’ll create a warmer, safer, and more energy-efficient environment for yourself and your family. A bit of time invested in winterizing your home will ensure a comfortable winter season in your RV Park Los Angeles and protect your investment for years to come.

Contemplating moving into your RV full time is both an exciting and scary thought. There are so many different things to consider as you decide if this is the right thing to be doing right now. Making this decision does not have to be difficult; think through the pros and cons and how this will affect your life. Once you can make a list of all of these things you can step back, look at all the information, then make an informed decision.

A major deciding factor in your decision could be finances. Living in your RV can either be cheaper or more expensive than renting an apartment. This depends on exactly how you plan to live in your RV. Planning out where you will be parking and living is a large contributor to costs. Making a RV Park Los Angeles is a great option, as then you will have a solid home base and still can travel and explore from there.

When moving into a RV you will have to think about storage space, utilities, and the layout of your RV. Certain RVs are better equipped for longer term use than others. If you already own a RV this is not an issue, but if you are looking into getting one think about what you want your space to look like. Do you want a larger cooking area, or more space for a bed? Have a list of things you want your RV to have as you go shopping so you know what to look for.

Moving full time in an RV gives you the opportunity to explore more, with the comfort of your new home. You can spend more money on other things and experiences. This kind of living is perfect for those that do not want/need a large living space. We hope you find the perfect RV and place to live and enjoy the new freedom in your life.

October is an exciting time of year that brings cold weather, fun attractions, and the promise of eating a lot of candy on the 31st. It can be difficult to get into the spooky season mood with so many different things going on in your life. A simple way to make your home a little more spooky is to decorate it. Decorating your living space makes your RV Park Los Angeles home feel fun and can bring a smile to your face every time you see it. This is also a great thing to do before hosting a halloween party, as it will set the mood for it.

Decorating your living space can seem like a large undertaking that will be time consuming but this does not have to be the case. You can do some relatively simple decorations that will still make your space feel spooky and festive.

Decorations can either be made or bought, depending on how much time and money you want to spend on this project. Making decorations can be cheaper and more fun that buying decorations at the store. You can get all of the supplies and assemble them while watching a scary movie. Making your own decoration will take some time, but it is a great time to get your loved ones involved and enjoy spending time together.

If you are interested in making your own decorations you can find a variety of ideas on the internet, many that come with a how to guide. These guides will explain what craft supplies you will need, how to assemble the decoration, and maybe even the estimated time it takes to complete it.

Store bought decorations are also a great option for home decorating. These decorations can be put up around your home and left there all month. There are fake cobwebs, cute witches, cool framed pictures, and so much more.

School is starting up again. Many kids are back to in-person school. Kids will have to get used to their family’s school schedule. They have to wake up earlier, get dressed for the day, make sure they have lunch, and get out the door while trying not to be late. Getting used to this schedule may be rough for some kids to adjust to. After school can also be rough. Your kids will be sitting behind a desk for a lot longer than they are used to. Sitting down all day can make you kids restless by the time they get back home. Finding wholesome and fun after school activities can help your children learn new skills and make new friends. Here are a few ideas to help you get started:

Get crafty. Kids love being able to make things. This could be drawing a picture, using watercolors to paint a picture, using clay to sculpt something, or other simple crafts involving few supplies. Find things in your RV Park Los Angeles RV. Some cities offer children’s art classes at their library or activity centers. Some art studios also offer children’s lessons.

Find a way to get them active. Sports are a great way to help kids build health habits. It includes exercise and in some cases a chance to learn better teamwork skills. Kids can be around others that share the same interest as them. There are city league sports teams for beginners or club teams for more advanced players.

Find other clubs or interests your child has. Encourage your children to find and improve their skills and hobbies. Let them explore multiple things to find what they are good at and like. Maybe your child is musically inclined, they could take music lessons. Or a child who loves reading could join a book club.

Many of you have seen me at my post about life at Imperial Trailer Village, a leading RV park in Los Angeles. What you may not know is that in a previous career, I taught elementary school, with a specialty in grades Kindergarten through 3rd. Most people don’t quite know what really happens in these classrooms, and imagine it in the worst-case scenario, like the first day for Arnold Schwarzenegger in “Kindergarten Cop.” It can be that way on some days, for sure!

Many years ago, as a student teacher in a kindergarten classroom, I was having a tough day. It was too wet to go outdoors, and all the children were climbing all over one another. I found myself being irritable, and so we took a short break and decorated our classroom for the holiday season. Paper chains took form and before I knew it, everyone was in a much better mood.

I’d been gifted a holiday clock and decided to hang it up to complete the décor. Within a few moments of hanging this clock, it played a short snippet of a Christmas carol. I realized that the music would be going on the hour each day and pledged right then to find a way to shut that off. As often happens with children, they surprised me. They froze, quickly scanned the room, and one of them cried, “It’s Santa’s elves! Everyone clean up so they will tell Santa that we’re being good.”

Boom! Before I knew it, I had 26 energetic 5– and 6–year olds scrambling and rushing to sit cross-legged on the carpet. This created a tradition that has endured for many years in my annual holiday decorations. For the children, the playing of the Christmas carol was completely random, so they worked hard to do their best since they never knew when a little elf may be watching.

The key to pulling this off is to put the clock near a window since the elves are always watching from there and playing music to say, “Hello!”

At home, when I had my own kiddos, I bought another of these magic positive behavior tools and my kiddos were as enamored with it. Seeing children hear a little tune and the excitement that they feel in the holidays (and the regular reminders to tidy up) is one of my favorite parts of the holiday!

I’ve always loved Thanksgiving and its meaning and have tried to instill a spirit of gratitude in my home. This is certainly easier said than done with the gluttony of Halloween and the commercialism of Christmas. When my children were young, I started the month of November with a swift change of our daily life with gratitude being at the center of our daily schedule with a few minutes each day as we went about our daily schedule before we went to sleep at Imperial Trailer Village, a premier RV park in Los Angeles.

The Gratitude Tree

Early on, I tried to draw tree trunks with branches upon which we could glue construction paper leaves on which we would record something daily that we were grateful for. I’m not bragging or anything, but I am a terrible artist. This idea evolved into one of my favorite traditions – the gratitude tree. So, confession time, I am totally not a Pinterest mom, rather one that tries to create something that usually looks like one of those “Nailed it” type photos.

But I digress, at the crux of the matter is that you have a tree of some form and cut out leaves, circles, anything. Each night, you will add something for which you are thankful, either as a family or individually by writing upon a leaf, circle, whatever and add it to the tree. It really depends on you and what works for your family.

The principle is simple. If we each know that we need to think of something for which we are thankful, we watch for those small things during the day. Same principle as, “You find what you focus upon.” As our kids have grown and started their families, I am glad to see that they kept the tradition going. Through the years, the Gratitude Tree has been an artificial Christmas tree, bare branches from the tree in our yard, a poster, and one of my daughters made a bunting with various shapes hanging from it. It really doesn’t matter what you choose, it’s the method that is important rather than its presentation.

As we march ever closer to Thanksgiving, we’re able to better reflect on those things for which we are grateful, like the adage says, “if you think about a yellow car, you will see a yellow car.” Now that everyone’s looking for yellow cars, we’d like to say that we are very grateful for our wonderful residents, neighbors, and friends at Imperial Trailer Village, long-time trailer park in Los Angeles
