It is almost December and Christmas is just around the corner. For many this means dusting off boxes and decorating for the season. Decorating in a smaller space can be a challenge, but smaller decorations will not diminish the holiday cheer in your home. You do not need a 7 foot tree or large decorations to turn your trailer or RV, at a Los Angeles RV Parks, into a cheerful holiday home. Here are some tips to help you achieve the look you want your home to have this holiday season. 

Think smaller

Having a large tree in a small space like a trailer is possible but hard to get in, and it takes up a lot of room. Instead of buying a traditional tree, get something smaller and more manageable. Getting a tree in a pot or even something small enough to fit on a coffee takes up less space. This will still allow you to have a tree and decorate it. Other decorations that can be downsized are garlands or wreaths. Downsizing decoration will leave your trailer feeling more open, instead of feeling cluttered.

Be a “tourist” in your town

We have all been guilty of taking the things we live around for granted. There are unique and cool places all around you. Look into famous local attractions like historical sites, parks, art exhibits, theme parks, nature formations, etc… If you want the full tourist experience visit local tourist traps. Make it a staycation, where instead of exploring a new city you explore your own. Going on a staycation can save you money and you get to sleep in your own bed and your Los Angeles RV Park.

Visit the library

Going to the library is a great way to stay out of the heat and learn something new. Kids will love getting to read and enjoy the creative environment and you can look for some books to enjoy. Many libraries offer free or inexpensive classes for adults, teens, and children. Check your local library’s website to get information and look at their schedule. 

Go on a day trip

If a full vacation is not an option for you this summer, going on a day trip is a great alternative. A well planned day trip can be just as fun as a vacation. When planning a day trip try to have a set plan a few days before you go. Plan the route you will be taking and where you will be going. 1. Have furniture that serves multiple purposes. This type of furniture is everywhere. We have all seen a couch that can turn into a bed. I have seen wooden chairs turn into tables and even picnic tables. By having furniture that serves multiple purposes you can save space. Instead of having a few things just have one that will serve all purposes. This is a great way to save space and I personally like two in one purpose things. 

1. If you have a TV the best idea is to mount it into the wall. By doing this you will not need to have an entertainment center to put a TV onto. Putting your TV onto the wall will save so much space in your home. It is out of the way and can stay there. 

1. Make sure you use your walls. Walls are a great space to hang pictures, TV’s, and especially shelves. Shelves are a great way to store your things and keep them out of the way. If you have a part of your wall you think you can use, just use it. Walls really can save you so much space and even make your small living area even bigger. 

1. If you have bigger items make sure you put them on the perimeter of your space. By doing this it will open up your room. If large things take up the middle it really makes any space feel smaller.

One of the most important things is to have snacks. Snacks make everyone’s car ride more enjoyable, and it can keep kids from becoming grumpy for a short amount of time. Several of our residents of Imperial Trailer Village, a long-time leader of Los Angeles RV Parks, have shared their best tips for all to benefit from their experience.

Window Tints

While many RVs or trailer homes have some tinting on their windows, increasing the tint can be beneficial to keeping the sunlight and heat out as well as to improve privacy. Even though we’re like a big family, everyone still likes having their privacy, right? You can either hire a professional to tint your windows or do it yourself. Doing it yourself is not difficult, but can be frustrating with bubbling, etc. Many of our residents, past and present, who have gone this route, have found that the added cost of hiring a professional is worth avoiding the hassle.

Add some more insulation

Depending on when your home was built, your insulation may need an upgrade. Obviously, the older homes will be more likely to be less insulated. We’ve heard reports of a 1995 trailer home that, when upgrading insulation, the owners found a ¼ inch layer of Styrofoam and several pairs of tube socks were all that was used. We don’t even want to guess on that one! This typically is a larger investment, but one that is highly effective.

Upgrade your window covering

Blinds are an amazing addition to your home and vary in their ability to block sunlight and heat, not to mention provides privacy.

Vinyl mini-blinds are low-cost, easily adapted to different sizes, and can provide for your basic needs. Life hack – if you want to maintain privacy and the window is above the level from which a Peeping Tom would be lurking, turn the blinds up when closing. If you are at eye-level with a passerby or below, turn the blinds down. This will give you the maximum privacy with the small gaps in the slats of mini-blinds aimed at the ceiling or floor.

Plantation blinds are an upgrade to mini-blinds, typically made of wood, and have wider slats. They perform better than vinyl mini-blinds, but not as well as the more “full-coverage” solutions listed below.

Pleated blinds give a combination of the coverage of a pull-down shade with the convenience of blinds. These are good at keeping out the light and some heat. They are not as good as the cellular blinds but are less expensive and easier to clean than cellular or honeycomb blinds.

Cellular or honeycomb blinds are the gold standard. They are made with multiple layers of fabric that, like pleated blinds, provide complete coverage, without the slat space. They are more expensive than slat blinds or pleated blinds.
