It’s that time of year where several of us are heading back to school. Here some of the best back to school tips for your safety.

 

Follow Road Rules

Make sure you and your kids are fully aware of all road rules. Always look both ways before crossing the road and always cross the streets at crosswalks when you have the go signal. Teach your kids to always be aware of motorists around them and to never step into the street while waiting for a bus. If riding a bike to school, learn all of the bike rules to make sure you aren’t putting yourself or your kids at risk.

 

Backpack Safety

The safety of a backpack is more important than you might think. Make sure you always look for ergonomically safe backpacks as to not strain the body. Never fill a backpack with too heavy of a load as this could also lead to strained muscles. It’s also a great idea to look for a backpack with hip and chest belts so that the weight is evenly distributed. A reflective backpack is also a must when it comes to safety because it’s important to as visible as possible.

 

Don’t Talk to Strangers

If you have kids, instruct them to never talk to a stranger in any situation. Teach them about who can be trusted such as their teachers and other responsible adults. Let your kids know to not respond to strangers if they are approached and to quickly notify a nearby trusted adult. If you notice someone following you, notify law enforcement right away so they can be on the lookout.

 

Safety On The Playground

The playground can become a place that is dangerous to children if property safety precautions aren’t taken. Make sure that your kids only play on playgrounds that have supervision and are properly padded. All equipment should have padding underneath in case of falls. Also teach them to never run on pavement and to always be aware of their surroundings.
